Broadcast

My time as both a student of and worker in broadcast has been extremely rewarding over the last couple of years.

I went back to school in my early thirties, in part, to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, so I decided to study journalism in hopes of gaining the skills and direction to pursue that goal.

During this time, I learned how to utilize active voice along with clear, conversational language to write for broadcast, and I also joined the Beach Vision crew at Long Beach State, which is dedicated to streaming live broadcasts of the university’s sporting events.

Beach Vision has instilled a professional standard in me to always be live at every position during a broadcast, from operating camera, to trimming audio levels, to wrapping cables. I’ve especially enjoyed working as a camera operator and perfecting framing for the various sports we cover, such as men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, and women’s soccer.

Novel Coronavirus and COVID-19 also presented a unique and historic challenge to my classmates and me to report the news during a pandemic, working and communicating remotely to achieve deadlines on CSULB’s internet news show, “Campus Connection.” I’m proud of the work I’ve done constructing TV news packages through reporting, shooting interview and b-roll footage, scripting and recording voiceover, and editing all these elements together.

Included above are two demo reels which I shot and edited from my time with Campus Connection and Beach Vision.
